Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded to read its metadata?
No. The ExifReader library reads the file in your browser, so the photo and its metadata stay on your device.
Which image files can it read?
JPG, PNG, WebP, TIFF and HEIC files up to 50 MB, one photo at a time.
Does it work with HEIC photos from an iPhone?
Yes, their EXIF data is read. Many browsers can't display HEIC, so the preview may show a placeholder, and a clean copy without metadata isn't available for HEIC or TIFF.
How do I remove the GPS location before sharing a photo?
When a JPG, PNG or WebP photo contains a location, a warning appears with a Download clean copy button. For JPG the metadata, comments and any embedded video or extra images (Motion Photo) are cut out of the file itself, so the picture is not recompressed and keeps its colour profile; PNG and WebP are re-drawn in your browser (PNG losslessly, WebP with a slight quality change possible). The copy is checked again for GPS data.
Why does it say no EXIF metadata was found?
The photo was probably exported without EXIF or passed through an app or platform that strips metadata, as many messaging and social apps do.
Is my location sent to a map service?
Only if you click View on map: that opens Google Maps or OpenStreetMap in a new tab with the coordinates. Nothing is sent while you just view the data.
