Frequently asked questions
- Why does this lunar calendar sometimes differ from Chinese calendars?
- It computes the Vietnamese calendar, whose new moons and solar terms are taken at Vietnam time (UTC+7). Chinese calendars use UTC+8, so now and then a month starts a day apart, a month has a different length or the leap month differs; Tết 1985 and 2007, for example, fall a day earlier in Vietnam.
- What is a leap month (tháng nhuận)?
- About every three years the lunar year gets a 13th month that repeats the number of the month before it, such as month 2 in 2023 and month 6 in 2025. When converting from lunar to solar, tick the leap month box to pick it; the box only appears when that year has that leap month.
- How do I read the month calendar?
- Each cell shows the solar day and, below it, the lunar day. The first day of a lunar month shows day/month (for example 1/9, and 1/6L for a leap month) and the 15th, the full moon, is highlighted. Weeks start on Sunday in English and Monday in Vietnamese. Use the arrows to change month, Today to jump back, or pick a day to see its full conversion above.
- Can I get a yearly reminder for a lunar date, like a death anniversary?
- Yes. Convert the lunar date, then press Add to calendar (.ics) under the result. You get the next 10 years as all-day events, each on the solar date of that lunar day, ready to import into Apple Calendar, Google Calendar or Outlook. A leap month uses the ordinary month, and day 30 moves to day 29 in years when the month has only 29 days.
- Why is day 30 of some lunar months rejected?
- Lunar months have 29 or 30 days, depending on when the next new moon falls. Day 30 of a 29-day month doesn't exist, so the converter says so instead of guessing.
- Which years and how accurate is it?
- Years 1900 to 2100. It uses Hồ Ngọc Đức's astronomical algorithm, the same as the Giapha OS family-tree app, and is checked against known Tết dates and every day of the range in both directions. Today's date always uses Vietnam time (UTC+7), even if your device is set to another time zone.
