Frequently asked questions

Is my barcode data uploaded?
No. The barcode is drawn in your browser, so what you type never leaves your device. Only anonymous usage counts such as the barcode type are recorded, never the data.
Which barcode types can I create?
Code 128 for any ASCII text (labels, shipping and inventory codes), EAN-13 for retail products and UPC-A for products sold in North America. Other types such as EAN-8 or ITF are not included.
What is the check digit and do I have to type it?
EAN-13 and UPC-A end with a check digit that scanners use to catch misreads. Enter 12 digits for EAN-13 or 11 for UPC-A and the tool adds it. If you enter the full number and the last digit is wrong, it tells you which digit it should be.
Can I use these barcodes on products in shops?
The tool draws a valid symbol for the number you give it, but retail numbers are issued by GS1. Using a made-up number can clash with a real product, so get your company prefix from GS1 before selling with EAN-13 or UPC-A. Code 128 needs no registration for internal use.
Should I download SVG or PNG?
SVG is vector, so it stays sharp at any print size and opens in design tools. PNG is a plain image for documents and web pages; pick a wider module (3x or 4x) for a sharper print. Always test-scan the printed result.
